QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS PDF Print E-mail

Q) Do I need to bring a partner?

A) No. We change partners frequently during each class and generally the number of males and females is even. But of course, if you have a partner, bring him/her along!

Q) I have a partner that comes to class with me; do we have to swap around or can we stay dancing together during the class?
A) Of course you can stay dancing together during the entire class. However, there are both advantages and disadvantages to this. Dancing has the potential to strengthen a relationship, as it is a form of communication between two people. However, it can also lead to frustration, especially if the partners have different expectations or natural ability. The female (who often picks moves up quicker than the male) can start to take over as the "leader" in order to "help" her partner get the move but this doesn't allow the male to develop his ability to lead, and the couple can get stuck in bad habits without realising because they have nothing else to compare to. Dancing with a variety of different people allows the men to develop strong leading techniques and the women to be able to follow leads rather than predict what their partner is going to do, or try to lead themselves. We recommend alternating between your partner and others in the class for the duration of each class to get a balance between both worlds.

Q) Are the numbers between men and women in a class usually even?
A) Usually the number of men and women at our classes are even, however, if there does happen to be a small shortage of one or the other, everyone gets to dance for the majority of the class because we frequently rotate partners. Those who sit out during one dance are rotated in for the next one and so on.

Q) How long is a beginners course?
A) Each beginners course runs for approximately 16 weeks, with a set curriculum. After students complete a beginners course, they are able to join the Intermediate class.

Q) I have completed a beginners course at Salsambada. Where do I go from there?
A) You can join our Intermediate class at any time. The Intermediate class does not have a start or end date like our beginners classes. However, you have been taught the fundamentals which will enable you to pick up the moves in any given week.

Q) You have several new beginners courses starting each year, but I can't find a starting date for an Intermediate class?
A) Our Intermediate class does not have a start and an end date like our beginners classes. This is because once a student has learnt the core moves from our beginners class, they have the skills to learn any move taught in the Intermediate class. Therefore, once a student completes a beginners course, they simply merge into the already running Intermediate class. The material taught in the Intermediate class is tailored from week to week specifically for the students in attendance.

Q) I have previously completed a beginners course at another dance studio. Can I join your Intermediate class, or do I have to go back and take your beginners course?
A) You can join our Intermediate class at any time. If after attending you find it is too difficult for you, you can attend one of our beginners classes instead. You do not have to start a beginners course from the beginning, you can attend a class that has already commenced. If you feel the Intermediate class is an appropriate level for you, do not let that stop you from also attending a beginners class in addition to the Intermediate class. Our prices allow you to attend more than one class per week at no additional cost, and we recommend revising the basics and getting a feel for our style, which may differ from your previous dance school.

Q) I started at one of your beginners classes, but after a few weeks I was no longer able to attend. I want to join your next beginners class, but I don't want to repeat the same classes as I've already taken. What can I do?
A) You are simply able to pick up where you left off. For example, if you previously attended 4 classes of a beginners course, then wait for the 5th week of the next beginners course before you attend. While we recommend revising as much as possible, it is not necessary for you to repeat the same classes, especially if you feel it is a waste of money or time or if you are bored with repetition. You do not need to register online to re-join a beginners class, you can simply attend when you are ready to re-join. However, it would be helpful if you advised us of this intention via email, so that we can inform you in case of any changes to time or cancellations etc.

Q) I want to join your new beginners class, but I can't make the first week. Can I still come the week after?
A) Yes. We accept new students who haven't danced before up to and including the 3rd week of a new beginners course. We do revision at the beginning of each class, but if you find it difficult to keep up, one of our instructors or advanced students can pull you aside and help you catch up what you have missed.

Q) I have to miss a few weeks of beginners classes due to work/family/sickness. Can I still attend the class when I get back? What can I do to catch up the missed material?
A) Yes. Your class pass is valid for a whole year, and does not need to be used for consecutive weeks. This flexibility is designed to help with busy schedules and sickness etc. In terms of catching up, it is not always necessary (depending on what was missed) - that is, you may be able to participate in the class without learning the missed material. However, we always have revision time at the beginning of each class, so you may find that you are able to catch up then. Instructors and advanced students at the classes can give you extra assistance if needed. You can also watch some of the instructional video clips on our website before returning to class, or you can organise a private lesson if you would prefer or if a larger number of classes are missed.

Q) I want to join one of your new beginners class. Do I have to register online?
A) While we can collect your details on the first night, we prefer for you to register your details online before the class. Online registration gives us an idea of who to expect and the ratio of males and females, so that we can organise extras to help at the class if necessary. Registering online also saves a lot of time on the first night by allowing the students to sign in very quickly.
